This program provides an introduction to the developme nt and use of rubrics to teach and to assess student learning. When well designed and implemented, rubrics are considered a best practice in asses sment. In its most basic form, a rubric is a scoring tool that identifi es the expectations for an assignment or learning outcome. Rubrics divide the assignment or learning outcome into its component parts and provide i ndicators for what constitutes levels of performance for each of the key d imensions. The rubric can be used to clarify the dimensions and expectati ons for student learning as well as to assess student learning for formati ve and/or summative purposes. This session will explore what rubrics are , why they promote learning and effective assessment, and how to use and/ or develop them for course and program-level assessment. The facilitators for this workshop are Julie Lindquist and Bump Halbritter, the former an d current Director respectively of Tier I Writing at MSU, who developed t he rubrics used in Tier I Writing courses. In this interactive session, participants will receive several templates and examples of rubrics and ha ve an opportunity to begin developing their own rubrics for instruction.
