Fellowship Application Deadline for graduate students engaging in i nternational study of coupled human and natural systems related to fish, wildlife and water resources

Michigan St ate University graduate students engaged in international fisheries and wi ldlife-related research in the vein of knowledge of coupled human and natu ral systems are invited to apply for fellowships, up to $5,000, through The William W. and Evelyn M. Taylor Endowed Fellowship for International Engagement in Coupled Human and Natural Systems.
This fellowsh ip was established by William W. Taylor and his wife, Evelyn. William Ta ylor, who currently is a University Distinguished Professor in the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, served as Chairperson of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife from 1992-2008. The goal of the end owment is to provide opportunities for fisheries and wildlife-related grad uate students to significantly engage in understanding the scientific and cultural challenges and opportunities dealing with coupled human and natur al systems at the global level.

Qualificatio n Criteria (the Scholarship is awarded based on the following):
Recipient s must be enrolled as graduate students at MSU and performing research rel ated to sustainability of fish, wildlife or water resources using a coupl ed human and natural systems approach.
Recipients mustHave demonstrated a cademic excellence
Articulate their commitment to research goals well mat ched to the fellowship showing evidence of leadership abilities and the ca pacity to make a distinctive professional or scholarly contribution
Contr ibute to a diverse educational community, as evidence in personal history and experience, research goals, or the promotion of understanding among persons of different backgrounds and ideas
Applicants must write a ref lective essay (no more than 3 single-spaced pages) that describes the indi vidual’s leadership skills, persistence, compassion, adaptability, fle xibility and appreciation/respect for multi-cultural experiences. In addit ion, this essay should include:The activities planned and expected outcom es of their engagement and importance of their work in a global context
T he applicant’s unique qualifications for pursuing their chosen topic of re search and engagement
The applicant’s career goals after graduation
The applicant’s plan for international engagement after the fellowship
The ap plicant’s plan for sharing their experiences with others; particularly wi th the policy makers and the public
Letter of support from host country mentor and agency
Letter of support from major professor at MSU
