Applications Being Accepted for the 2024 Keystone Symposia Fellows Program

Now through October 20, Keystone Symposia is accepting applications for its 2024 Fellows Program. This one-year program provides leadership and career-development training to scientists from under-represented (UR) and disadvantaged backgrounds, to promote their successful career advancement. Given the success of the program in launching the careers of nearly 90 UR scientists who have become leaders in their fields and communities, Keystone Symposia is extending the initiative to include a new track for Postdoc KS Fellows. Progressing from postdoctoral training to a faculty appointment is a daunting transition, and may be especially challenging to those who have followed a less-than-conventional path or whose peers have lost interest in academic careers. How should you prepare for and progress through the application process, which takes approximately one year, and what should you expect at each step? Good preparation and careful planning are important, as is managing expectations to avoid becoming discouraged early in the process. We will cover how to go about choosing, applying, interviewing, negotiating, transitioning, and getting started in your faculty position.

Coming soon: NPA International Equity Summit

Through a series of interactive online discussions led by the NPA, the summit seeks to identify barriers – and find paths forward – in the greater postdoctoral community that significantly and/or disproportionately impact international scholars.

Although the number of postdoctoral scholars in the United States today who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents now comprises a strong majority (58 percent), these individuals face high barriers to success that demand greater attention and understanding. Roundtable discussions are currently planned on a variety of topics of interest to the international postdoctoral community featuring representatives from government, industry, nonprofits, and academia.

From greater understanding of the immigration process, to improved methods of surviving the transition to the United States beyond one’s research, this summit is designed to shine a spotlight on issues that often create both anxiety and feelings of isolation for international postdocs. It is the hope of the NPA and its allies that these conversations will lead to further discussions about specific issues and actions toward greater equity for international scholars in the postdoctoral community.
